Through all my versions of Ubuntu since 2010, I have used a USB
scanner, an Artec 48U. All I have had to do is make sure that the file
Artec48.usb is on the Desktop and rub xsane.
Now that I have ver. 22.04 installed, it is yet another item that hasn't
carried over successfully. I launch the normal application 'xsane', it
tries to link to the scanner, but fails:
"Failed to connect to artec_eplus48U:libusb:001:002".
'lsusb' shows the scanner in Bus 001, Device 002, and the fault message
given by xsane shows that it could not match that setup. I have looked
at loads of Help Ubuntu pages, to no avail, whatever I try fails to
work. This is the same on both my laptop, the usual place for the
scanner, and also the desktop, both with Ubuntu 22.04.

Grrr!

As usual, any help very much appreciated.

I fixed it! I dug around and found a procedure for installing it on a
new install. I followed that, and success!
Time for a G&T, methinks!

Others might some day find useful a note of where you found the information!

Indeed, no problem. I don't know where this came from originally, but I
found it in an old list of Linux Tips that I started for myself when I
first installed Ubuntu 8.04 (!) This is exactly what I read, obviously
it needed modifying as necessary for the current setup.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"Item 55. Installing scanner driver. See also Item 83.

[sudo aptitude install sane sane-utils # xsane should be installed
automatically) lsusb # make sure scanner is recognized]

scanner driver: (windows/system32/drivers/)Artec48.usb

sudo mkdir /usr/share/sane/artec_eplus48u # (or folder referenced in
/etc/sane.d/artec_eplus48u.conf) sudo chown -R yourusername:
/usr/share/sane/artec_eplus48u cp Artec48.usb
/usr/share/sane/artec_eplus48u #find Artec48.usb wherever it is stored
(desktop?)

Make sure the address from ""lsusb"" 05d8:4003 is correctly identified
in artec's /etc/sane.d/artec_eplus48u.conf file.

sudo aptitude install sane sane-utils"

---------------------------------------
Then item 83, but I didn't need that, so I haven't gone through
it, and cannot confirm if it's any good (it looks as though it has a
different emphasis, rather on file saving):

"Item 83. Scanner use on ver. 20.04 (18.04)
Scanner does not work with Ver. 20.04, use ver. 18.04 instead.

a. sudo sane-find-scanner. Confirm that USB port is :002, if not:
sudo gedit etcsane.d/arted_eplus48u.conf
and change usb port ref.
b. Sudo xsane will make xsane run. Save images to /Downloads.
c. cd /home/david/Downloads
d. sudo chown david:david {file.name}
e. cd mediadavid/Expansion_Drive
f. sudo cp homedavid/downloads/ {file.name} Transfer

This should copy the new scans to Transfers on the Expansion Drive."
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps somebody sometime.

I enjoyed the G&T so much I had a repeat, to confirm the first one.
